POD: Day 226 | 3.27.12
After bending a couple of photographer's ears about good places to get authentic Mexican food in Charlotte, I took it upon myself to find one of the places on my day off. Way down South Boulevard is a hole in the wall called Taqueria Mexico. Not only do they have delicious tacos with doubled corn tortillas, they also have an amazing trio of hot sauces that you get just for sitting down (and tall glasses of sugary jamaica to soothe the heat on your tongue). Add to that an intimate setting that beams with colors from their hand-painted chairs and tables that depict scenes from bull fighting rings, pueblos, and various plants and animals. Of the four tacos I consumed (2 carnitas, 1 lengua, and 1 papas y chorizo) the papas y chorizo was my favorite. In fact, I bought ingredients and made the same tacos at home a few nights later because I wanted more :)

POD: Day 158 | 1.19.12
While researching different settings on my camera in my user manual, I stumbled upon a feature that I was not aware of: repeating flash. I set up a white towel in my kitchen and using a clear pint glass with water, I dropped ice cubes into the water while trying to capture something interesting. This was a pretty fun experiment--I love learning new things! During editing I played around with toning (black and white, selenium, etc.).

Water and Light
Using a 50mm manual focus lens and intentionally underexposing, I shot a few abstract images of lights through a rained-on car window. Something about them reminds me of x-rays.

POD: Day 107
I went into the "stupid room" earlier today while using strobes. I decided I would play with them once I got home because as the saying goes, "If you don't use it, you lose it." Davis was my willing subject.
In other news, Murray is adorable.

Film Love
Last Friday, we shot our weekly football game using FILM!!! We used 35mm cameras and Kodak T-Max P3200 film. It was a great experience (I miss using film), but nowhere near as great as seeing the results after we processed our rolls today. We processed the film, printed in the darkroom (with snow flake-sized chunks of grain on our prints) and captioned our top 3 peak action shots starting at 9:00am, with a 1:00pm deadline. It was tedious around 12:30 when we were all trying to shove our negatives into sleeves and get everything turned in on time, but we made it out alive. I was reminded how much I missed the smell of fixer on my hands.

Music Video | White Flowers
For Multimedia class we had a final project that involved making a music video for a band. Luckily, Philip Pledger, with the band Estrangers, agreed to let us use the band's song, White Flowers for our video. Many thanks to the band for being willing to participate in this project---we couldn't have done it without you!
The wonderful team I worked with included two fellow photojournalism students, Anna Eyler and Alyssa Murkin. Along with the help of two incredibly lovely people as the female and male characters in the video, Carleigh Morgan and Dillon Deaton, the video came together quite nicely. Anna, Alyssa and I spent hours storyboarding and working out every scene while listening to a great song that is now permanently burned into our memories. With everyone working so well together, as well as late hours, plus having locations that fit the scenes so well, we were able to maintain a lot of the original vision we had for the video.
I could not have asked for a better team with Anna and Alyssa. Their creativity and determination to not only work hard, but also make something that we could all be proud of, was truly inspiring. You ladies are the best!
A special 'thank you' to Krankies Coffee for letting us invade your space after hours!
reflections*
This is the final print from the digital take I posted a couple weeks ago. This was taken with a Mamiya C330, using Kodak B&W Plus-X 125 film. This was my favorite image from my portfolio :)
all things summon us to death
"All things summon us to death. Nature, almost envious of the good she has given us, tells us often and gives us notice that she cannot for long allow us that scrap of matter she has lent ... She has need of it for other forms. She claims it back for other works."
-Jacques-Benigne Bossuet
reflections
this was an outtake from one of my portfolio shoots. the two women in the photo are twin sisters, kate and lauren, who were willing subjects for my idea. the final image (which will be scanned and posted soon) was different from this composition, but i liked this one a lot.
