POD: Day 191 | 2.21.12

Happy Fat Tuesday! I happened upon  a parade right before it started in downtown Winston-Salem this evening. I quickly ran over and took a few photos within the 5 minutes before I had to leave. I wish I could have spent more time at the parade---it looked like they were about to break it down!

Cycling Sunday

A couple of blocks were closed off this afternoon in downtown Winston-Salem in order to allow car-free cycling, walking, skateboarding scooting and roller skating. The event, known as Cycling Sunday, is sponsored by the City of Winston-Salem Department of Transportation, the Forsyth County Health Department, and the Winston-Salem Urban Area Bicycle & Pedestrian Program. According to a volunteer, this is partly an effort to encourage kids to get on their bikes and enjoy riding in their community, as well as getting their parents engaged in an outdoor activity with their children. It was great seeing so many people on bikes in the middle of a street that is usually crowded with cars.

Camino Bakery Grand Opening

Cary Clifford, owner of Camino Bakery, speaks to a guest of the grand opening for the bakery. The block of Fourth Street between Cherry and Marshall Streets in downtown Winston-Salem was blocked off in order to host street performers, a slew of guests and a live performance by the Darnell Woodies.

A Perfect Way to Cool Off

While this little boy cooled off at the water pump in Old Salem...

the people across the street got a kick out watching him.

A Photo A Day

Today was the first day of Photojournalism classes. I, along with six other students, make up the PJ concentration and I am beyond excited what we will be learning this year! One of the assignment we were given today was 'A Photo A Day', which means that we will be required to post a fresh photo to our blogs every day of the week. I have never done this type of project and look forward to the challenge.

POD: Day 1

Up Close and Personal

The assignment was to find thirty-six people we did not know, photograph them no less than three feet away (2/3 of them with flash), get their name, age and an interesting fact. Finding strangers is not hard, they're everywhere. Finding strangers who are willing to have their personal space invaded by a camera and reveal something about themselves to someone they've never met---well, that can be a little more tricky. I got a lot of people quickly saying "No" (and even one "Hell No"), but I also got a lot of people who gladly said "Sure." I think people are intrigued by the notion that they are being documented by someone who knows nothing about their personality or their life or circumstance and in the span of a few minutes, you walk away knowing one less stranger in this world.

One thing I enjoyed the most was talking to these people. Some of them instantly had incredible parts of their lives they wanted to share and others took a little while, not because they didn't have an interesting fact, but because I had a feeling it was not often they had someone to converse with. Some facts that I collected were truly interesting ("I was born in a meteor crater"), some were adventurous ("In 17 days, I'm going to jump out of a plane 7 times at 1,000 feet"), some were morbid ("I like working in graveyards") and some were a little silly ("I'm lookin' for a sugar mama"). A few of these turned into full-blown stories that could not be summed in one sentence---those were my favorite.

"It's in the eyes" | Weekly 1

In Small Format class, we have weekly assignments. The first one was themed "It's in the eyes".  We had to photograph a complete stranger, get their name and make sure that the picture was all about their eyes. This young woman was my willing stranger.
