A couple of blocks were closed off this afternoon in downtown Winston-Salem in order to allow car-free cycling, walking, skateboarding scooting and roller skating. The event, known as Cycling Sunday, is sponsored by theCity of Winston-Salem Department of Transportation, theForsyth County Health Department, and theWinston-Salem Urban Area Bicycle & Pedestrian Program. According to a volunteer, this is partly an effort to encourage kids to get on their bikes and enjoy riding in their community, as well as getting their parents engaged in an outdoor activity with their children. It was great seeing so many people on bikes in the middle of a street that is usually crowded with cars.
