POD: Day 212 | 3.13.13

Day two of internship was quite eventful. It started with a press conference at the Charlotte Immigration Court with Rep. Luis Gutierrez, D-Ill, speaking in support of Gabino Sanchez, an undocumented immigrant who is facing deportation. Several supporters and clergy stood with Sanchez and his family. After the press conference, Observer photographer Diedra Laird, took my cards, along with her own, to the office to edit and start putting them online. I stayed behind for the verdict of the hearing. Sanchez received good news: he was given two months to allow a lawyer to prepare his case. What a great day for my first assignment!
There was a slideshow of 20 images (view here) from the event and my photos were used as the centerpiece on 2A. These are the images that were used for print:

Gutierrez embraces Sanchez after his hearing at the Charlotte Immigration Court. Sanchez's deporation was suspended for two months while a lawyer prepares his case. Gutierrez says he might return for May's hearing.
