Juggling Club | WFU

Andrew Austin, founder and President of the Wake Forest University Juggling Club, was nice enough to allow me to photograph during one of the regular club meetings tonight on campus. They met in the Reynolds Gymnasium inside a multipurpose room normally inhabited by ballroom dancers and despite a small turnout, Austin juggled with enthusiasm the entire time.

POD: Day 59

Austin, 25, has been juggling for the past ten years (he is self-taught). "Juggling is usually associated with clowns, but if you go to conventions you see two types of people juggling; hippies and geeks who are into physics," he said as he proceeds to explain the physics of juggling to me.

I listened, but a lot of it went over my head. Who knew juggling was so scientific?

Austin, a graduate student in the Documentary Film Program, was joined by two fellow DFP students, one of whom joined him in his juggling efforts. He explained how 30 students signed up to join the Juggling Club so he prepared 90 tennis balls (hand-filled with rice and sealed with caulk), but only a handful of people showed up---and all from his program. It disappointed him but he hopes more people will take interest and join as the year goes on. It was a new experience for me and very interesting one at that. If you are a student at Wake Forest, CHECK. IT. OUT!!!
