POD: Day 216 | 3.17.12

My day off was spent venturing uptown to the 16th Annual Charlotte St. Patrick's Day Parade.

POD: Day 213 | 3.14.12

Wednesday was the first day I was set out on my own. The high temperature for the day was expected to reach 85, which meant the paper needed a 'warm weather' photo. I had no idea here to go so I just got in my car and started to drive. I came across Veterans Park on Central Avenue and started hunting. The park has tennis courts, a playground, softball field, basketball courts, and plenty of green space for walking or lounging. This is the image I made that day and it played as a weather photo in Thursday's paper on 2C:
Marta Salinas, center, pushes her 4-year-old son, Rayond, while her daughter, Katie, 3, swings beside them as they enjoy a warm, sunny Wednesday afternoon in Charlotte. Spring weather is expected again today, with a high of 84.

POD: Day 191 | 2.21.12

Happy Fat Tuesday! I happened upon  a parade right before it started in downtown Winston-Salem this evening. I quickly ran over and took a few photos within the 5 minutes before I had to leave. I wish I could have spent more time at the parade---it looked like they were about to break it down!

If you stop me and ask what I'm doing (because of the cameras), you can bet that I will focus my lens on you and get your name :) This is Antonio Garrett from Harlem, New York. He is in Asheboro visiting his mother. I encountered him, along with several others, during the "Day in the Life of Asheboro" shooting assignment today.

In the middle of a busy day there was a bit of beauty as the sun set behind the trees. And of all places for something goegeous to happen, this was in the school parking lot. Look at that color---beauty is all around us!

The RCC Armadillo

These photos were taken as part of an assignment that involves the history of how an odd little animal with its own armor came to be the mascot for Randolph Community College (more on the story later!).

Photojournalism students find a seat on the floor of the Westin before seminars begin.
A room full of respected photojournalists reviewing the portfolios of photojourn students and freelancers. It was slightly nerve-wracking at first, but ended up being one of the best parts of the seminar.

J. B. Edwards, front, and Joanna Tudor, back, of Winston-Salem, watch as public art is created during the Winston-Salem Light Project at the Stevens Center on Fourth Street. The multimedia project, created by students from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, is meant to heighten awareness of city elements in a way that prompts reflection on the urban environment and our role in it.

The Winston-Salem Light Project will present “One City Block: Urban Revelations” Nov. 16-20 from sunset to 11 p.m. on Fourth Street between Cherry and Marshall streets and in front of the Winston-Salem Journal on Marshall Street. It is free and open to the public.

I had the pleasure of helping hundreds of people welcome home World War II veterans as the final Triad Flight of Honor landed at Piedmont Triad International Airport in Greensboro this evening. (more photos to follow)

POD: Day 84

I went to my first full-fledged cyclocross race this afternoon at the Salisbury Community Park. I played with angles, including getting very low to the ground (i.e. lying on my stomach and getting as close to the racers without having my head stomped). I continue to like bike races more and more, especially cyclocross with it's sharp turns, steep hills and obstacles. In between swarms of bikers, I easily pass time by making friends with all the adorable pups :)

POD: Day 84

This guy was a bad-ass who jumped the obstacles while still on his bike---even while going uphill. Pret-ty impressive!

This is one of the low angles I shot from. While it was not completely successful, I think it's still kind of cool!
