POD: Day 137

Day two of shadowing photographers at the Winston-Salem Journal began with David Rolfe as he went to shoot a portrait of a man, Jesse Williams, who lives in a rooming house in Winston-Salem. A new ordinance is set to go into effect next year in which such houses will violate city zoning ordinance

Just as we returned to the office, I was handed off to Lauren Carroll who was heading out to shoot a portrait of Michael Myers, the brother of Ibrahim Myers, who was struck by a car while riding his bike. While Ibrahim is recuperating, Michael continues to visit and give updates. These photos were taken at Mozelle's, where Michael works.
After Mozelle's we headed to the Salem Fine Arts Center so Lauren could photograph artist Laura C Frazier of Farm Girl Arts. Laura creates little animals from felted wool that she gets from the sheep on her farm. In addition to creating the tiny creatures, she has three personal pieces that are on display as part of the exhibit, The "F" Word---Feminist Art of the 21st Century. Her work is unique and imaginative and she is absolutely delightful. You can find her work on Facebook and on Etsy. Lauren commented that getting to meet wonderful people like Laura makes her job feel like an awesome one.

The whole day, from David to Lauren, and talks with Walt Unks in between, proved be yet another day filled with great advice and several learning moments that I will take with me as I enter my next to last semester of school. Even more exciting is that being in the newsroom and tagging along with the photographers has made me incredibly excited about my internship this Spring. Many, many thanks to Walt Unks, Bruce Chapman, Lauren Carroll and David Rolfe for allowing me to be their shadow for a couple of days---I loved it!
