Payne first had the idea back in 2008 as he watched a house in his neighborhood burn to the ground. While it burned he asked his grandmother, "What about their books?" His grandmother also collects and donates books for the adults in her community and during a speaking engagement of hers, he asked if he could speak about doing the same thing, but for children. During his speech, someone went to their car and brought back a few books for him and so it began. Since that time, Payne has continued to speak publicly about his efforts and the Children's Book Legacy has grown large enough to supply books to 12 different agencies in Forsyth County including the M. L. King, Jr. Community Recreation Center Library and Brenner Children's Hospital. Upon doing a bit of searching I discovered that Payne has also been recognized as one of the 2011 Hasbro Community Action Heroes. He is truly incredible!
To be so young, Cameron Payne seems wise beyond his years. I had a feeling as I was speaking to him that I was speaking to a future leader of the community. I am sure we will hear more about this young man and his amazing accomplishments.
Cameron Payne, left, receives accolades from Councilman Dan Besse, right, for his outstanding volunteer efforts in the community through his program, The Children's Book Legacy. |
